The last several months, I have been taking time to do things I want to do. I’m just spending time on me. In November, I signed up for a basic drawing class at the Drawing Studio. It was a six-week class for three hours on Thursday mornings. I enjoyed it so much that I am now in the 2nd level drawing class which began in January, and I’ve signed up for a one-shot watercolor class next week. I’ve wanted to try some kind of art for a long time, so I’m happy to finally be doing it. I sometimes struggle to make time to do my homework, but I absolutely love the three hours in class. Also, I’ve started meeting at another student’s house to work on our homework together, so that is making it easier for me to actually do the homework.
At about the same time, I started a cardio class that my neighbor teaches at the Lighthouse Y. I knew I needed to get more exercise, and I found that this class is really fun and gets my heart rate going. We do lots of dance steps in the first half hour of the class, then we do weights, and finally stretches and cool down. The class meets early on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I try to not let anything prevent me from going – it’s so easy to make excuses and then get out of the habit of going.
That got the ball rolling, so then I started going to a line dance class at the Y. I was completely lost in that class the first couple of times. The class does lots of the same steps as the Cardio class, but it does them faster and in quicker combinations. In the cardio class, we do 8 kicks and than 4 grapevine, and then repeat that, while in the line dance class, we do 2 kicks, 1 grapevine, a quarter turn, three side steps, and then another turn. I often ended up facing the wrong way or running into someone! I am slowly getting better at that class, and I haven’t hurt anyone. I think it is good exercise for my body, but maybe even better for my brain – it’s kind of like learning a new language. I’m trying to go to that class 2 times a week.
All this makes writing group on Thursdays kind of crazy. 7:30-8:30 cardio class, rush home and grab something to eat very quickly. 9-12 drawing class, rush home and get something to eat very quickly. 12:45 pick up Cindy and come to the group. But I actually love Thursdays!
I think I’m happier doing these things for me. It’s kind of nice to reclaim my life a little bit. It feels like I’m finding a better balance.
