This past weekend I was in a class for helping bereavement people. In the class were two med students, studying to be doctors. They were there so they could be better doctors, not only in medicine, but for the care needs other than medicine to their patients. One of them plans on still volunteering after he becomes a doctor. Right now he is going to school and volunteering in the Hospice unit, and he trains some of the volunteers. He doesn’t want to forget to care for the mental needs, to be a better doctor in all areas.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more/all doctors would have these same feelings? I know you are thinking, “Just wait till he becomes a doctor – he won’t have the time to volunteer; he probably won’t even think of it!” But you know – I don’t think that this young man, the future doctor, will forget or not find time to volunteer. I believe he will!
