Aunt Sadie’s – Chapter 4

by Ruth

The next day we were all up early. The beginning of our vacation with Aunt Sadie and Uncle Jim.

After washing and dressing we went downstairs where such good cooking smells were coming from the kitchen. Aunt Sadie had breakfast all ready for us. Bernice finally joined us. Aunt Sadie had our day already planned for us. After breakfast we were all going berry picking. She had little metal pails for each of us. When we were ready with our sun hats and gloves so as not to crush the berries, we started out down the hill on the side of the house. Aunt Sadie had us all hold hands and started out with a song. We quickly joined in with her.

The farmer in the dell.
The farmer in the dell.
Hi-ho the derry-o, the farmer in the dell.

The farmer takes a wife.

We reached the berry bushes but where were the berries??

My aunt said look closer and then we saw tiny red berries. These were currants my aunt said. We were going to bake two currant pies. My cousins and I started on the lower branches while my aunt picked the berries higher up. Finally, with our pails full, we started back up the hill.

Back at the house we all had a nice cold glass of milk and then we all started talking at once.

Bernice was quite proud of her full pail as she had picked the most (perhaps my aunt had added to her pail). We all had lunch and then helped my aunt with the baking of the pies.
