The Cruelest Month

By Leslie

T.S. Eliot said that “April is the cruelest month.” That’s just not so. October has been my cruelest month, and I just know that April will be kinder. To be short, and not-so-sweet, I have had, since October 4th, a gaping, extremely painful hole in my mouth where a tooth (and bone) once proudly stood. My food has been liquefied or pureed, and my voice is a shadow of its former self, as talking is quite painful.

Oh yes, there has been sunshine in my life – good books, good friends, and, most of all, a caring, devoted husband. The flowers still bloom, inside and out; the days are beautiful; the nights are crisp. I still write and edit, and I’ve even joined a study group. What’s more, our daughter and her family are coming for a flying (literally and figuratively) visit in early November.

So, I await the kindness of the months to come. But, in the meantime, ‘though I may not grin, I shall bear it. I have the kindness of so many to help me through this night.
