Careless People

By Elvira

They                                  were                            Careless people
these Lazy Babies!
Pleasure                was                  their goal
no matter who
they           hurt.

Like                                    Stampeding                 Steeds,
They                                  entered                       rooms
Painted
bejeweled
Tuxedo Stuffed
Commandeering         table,
Chair
For they                 were                            the Swells:
the alcoholic
writer
plagiarizer
storyteller
the “crazed”
woman
Money,
Power
Influence               was their ticket —
and                  they
used it
Bathtub
Gin
Baby Parties                                              never
thinking of the
Consequence.

Then the Bomb came.
Zelda                                 spun                 on toes
to a snake pit
breaking          out in a Rash
every time Scott came.
Scott                                  stole                her writings
her child
her life

Later                                  Put                               on celluloid
Woman break
Plagiarist
Closet Homosexual
and Papa,
Alcoholic
Wife beater
Braggart                                        loved by many

In the End,                                     these people
died:
suicide
fire
disability

and, we                             continue to Praise them
For                               it is easier to
gloss                over faults
than                                               to question      them
In turn,                                          we
become Careless People
For another
Generation.
