I’ve been thinking about money lately. Nothing good – after all who has anything good to say about money?
It is the “root of all evil.” Or get rid of it – “’Tis better to give than receive.” Pearl Bailey was kind of reflecting on the whole situation when she said, “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Believe me, rich is better.” Ben Franklin said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” (Ruth remembers that.) But that doesn’t speak to the good or evil of it.
But what I find interesting is the concept of money. Gold, gelt, cash, greenbacks, coin, legal tender, dinero, marks, rubles, yen, wampum, bucks, to name just a few. So many names and we know them all, our language or another, slang or proper English. We know more words meaning money than words for good, bad, hello, goodbye, love, peace, thirsty, or hungry. I could go on and on. But perhaps I’ve gone on long enough. After all, time is money.
