Seems like only yesterday
men and young boys
hop on the train on their
way to war. “Why?” we asked.
Seems like only yesterday
I walked across the frozen
ice covered with deep
snow in the dark.
No lights were allowed.
Seems like only yesterday
The door bell would ring.
One of us would fearfully
answer. There stood an
erect soldier. “I’m sorry
to inform you . . . “
Seems like only yesterday
The radio roared,
“The war in Europe is over!”
What did we really learn?
What did we really accomplish?
I’ll never forget
the pain
the losses
the question, “Why?”
the sacrifice
that brought our freedom
Lest we forget – NEVER!
