Of Mark Twain and Me

By Leslie

Last Sunday I read wonderful news in the newspaper. Yes, you heard what I said correctly – there was good news in the newspaper. It appears that 2015 was a good year for the printed page – books that you can feel, touch, and even sometimes smell – remain very viable. E-books still hold only 25% of the market. What accounts for the persistence of the prominence, actually dominance, of print books? Surprise – the emergence of adult coloring books! As the creator of the very successful “Secret Garden” coloring book (a novel that is a family favorite) said, her coloring book could not and would not be an e-book. Yes e-books and Nook readers and Kindles have their place, especially for travelers, but I will take the living printed page. To paraphrase Mark Twain, “notices of [the printed pages’] demise have been greatly exaggerated.”
