Vicki’s Request

By Leslie

Vicki requested a list of 10 books that have made a mark in my life. What a difficult request! I have read so many outstanding books, fiction and no-fiction. Many were wonderful entertainment, or incredibly enlightening. And many were read just because they were recommended by others. Then there’s the problem of age and the inroads it has carved within my memory. So without further excuses, I offer the following – recognizing that another day would bring another list.

  1. Diary of Anne Frank
  2. A Country Year – Sue Hubbell
  3. My Antonia – Willa Cather
  4. Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy
  5. To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee
  6. Cutting for Stone – Abraham Verghese
  7. Plum Wine – Angela Davis-Gardner
  8. The Samurai’s Garden – Gail Tsukiyama
  9. Circle of Friends – Maeve Binchey
  10. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn – Betty Smith

I would love to see others’ lists. The beauty of books goes beyond their visual and tactile allure and, of course, their reading – to savoring, sharing, discussing – and sometimes, rereading. Thank you, Vicki, for bringing back such wonderful memories.
